A Look Inside Blind Brook High School’s Up-and-Coming Digital Music Program

From that single class, the digital music program at Blind Brook has grown into a truly unique course featuring recording studios and a variety of classes. It has taken on a life of its own under the direction of Mr. Lotze, who has made it very popular among students and has changed the face of music education at the high school. When Mr. Lotze entered the school, the program was already in place, but it was basically all about sheet music. Drawing from his background in electronic music, recording, and hip-hop, he added new elements that would more closely match the interests of students and the real world of the music industry. “Once students come into the room and see the equipment, it entices them to want to do stuff,” Lotze said, explaining how the cutting-edge tools spark curiosity and creativity among students.

One student, Benjamin Goldowsky, said, “A lot of people want to do [the program] because everyone can connect to music.” This broad appeal has brought in students of all levels, from beginners to those with musical experience. Mr. Lotze particularly enjoys the students who think they cannot do it, as he said that one of the most rewarding aspects of his job is seeing people who didn’t think they had a chance to really nail it. Budgetary constraints made it difficult to build this program because they had to start small and buy equipment piece by piece. As time went on, he added to the facilities and resources, moving closer to his vision for the program. Today, Mr. Lotze says the program is “90% of what [he] envisioned it being.”

What sets Blind Brook’s digital music program apart is its rarity. Few schools offer similar programs, let alone ones with small class sizes that allow for personalized instruction. Mr. Lotze’s industry experience also adds a unique dynamic, as he actively learns with his students. “I’m not just someone telling the students what to do; I’m actively learning also,” he said. This collaborative environment fosters creativity and growth among the students.

In the future, Mr. Lotze hopes for a self-sustaining program that evolves with student interest and technological changes. He hopes other schools will follow the lead of Blind Brook, and he says the most important thing is to start small, as “All you need is computer software, headphones, and a keyboard.” The digital music program at Blind Brook is one example of what innovation and dedication can do to change education. It makes this art form accessible, engages students to explore their creativity, and helps them discover new talents, proving that music truly is for everyone.
